Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)
On this page you will find useful information about the meaning of Trap-Neuter-Return (commonly referred to as TNR) which improves the lives of feral cats, improves their relationships with the people who live near them, and decreases the size of colonies over time, while helping answer the needs of the homeless cat population in our community.
IMPORTANT TNR PROGRAM UPDATE
Klassy Kats of Butts County is currently suspending our hands-on TNR services indefinitely.
TNR remains an important part of our mission and something we strongly believe in. However, as an entirely volunteer-based rescue, we have reached a point where our available volunteers and resources are no longer sufficient to continue physically trapping, transporting, and returning cats for TNR.
Our rescue is currently facing several major resource challenges, including limited volunteer availability and the upcoming loss of our adoption space at Petsense as the store prepares to close. With our adoption program needing additional attention and our overall resources stretched thin, we must temporarily step back from providing hands-on TNR services.
What does this mean?
At this time, Klassy Kats volunteers will NOT be physically providing the following TNR services:

Trapping cats

Picking cats up
-
Transporting cats to or from veterinary appointments

Taking cats to spay/neuter appointments
-
Returning cats to their original location
Individuals wishing to TNR community cats will need to handle the trapping, transportation, veterinary appointment, and return themselves.
BUT WE CAN STILL HELP!
Although we are not currently able to physically perform TNR, we are still committed to helping our community learn how to do TNR safely and humanely.
We have humane traps available to loan, and we are happy to provide education and guidance to help you understand the TNR process.

Our goal is to give you the tools and information you need to do TNR yourself.
If you do not desire to TNR kitties on your property, you will have to contact Butts County Animal Services at 770-775-8011. RESCUES ARE NOT LICENSED OR LEGALLY ALLOWED TO INTAKE STRAY ANIMALS. We also cannot guarantee the outcome of cats picked up by or dropped off at Butts County Animal Services.
**If you have a very sick or injured stray/feral community cat, please visit your local emergency or urgent vet OR call your local animal control.**
Much of the information provided below comes from an organization called Allie Cat Allies, and a link to their organization, along with more detailed information about how you can help our "community cats" in a safe and humane way can be found on their website.
In a Trap-Neuter-Return program, community cats are humanely trapped (with box traps), brought to a veterinarian to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, eartipped (the universal sign that a community cat has been neutered and vaccinated), and then returned to their outdoor home.
How does TNR stabilize and reduce feral colonies?
Trap-Neuter-Return quickly stabilizes feral cat populations by stopping the breeding cycle of cats through sterilization and therefore improves their lives while preventing reproduction.
How does TNR improve cat lives?
Trap-Neuter-Return relieves cats of the constant stresses of mating and pregnancy. Mating behaviors cease, like roaming, yowling, spraying, and fighting. Cats are vaccinated against rabies and their overall health improves.
How does TNR answer the needs at your home and in the community?
The population stabilizes so no new kittens! Cats become better neighbors. Colonies become quieter as behaviors like yowling or fighting stop for mating, calls to authorities about the cats decrease significantly, and community morale improves
Remember the more you can participate in the TNR process, the quicker we can assist you in finding the best solution, and MOST IMPORTANTLY = help to SAVE cats lives, and PREVENT unwanted kittens from being born!

Our Trap Loan Program is the fastest form of assistance that Klassy Kats can assist you with. We have traps that can be borrowed and used for your own scheduled TNR appointment (see our Spay and Neuter page for great low cost places that do TNR appointments). We will be glad to teach you the "tricks of the trade" and show you how to use a trap. We do request a trap deposit but it is given back upon trap return.
